Explaining why people are different colors, sexualities, religions, etc. to children isn’t exactly an easy thing to do. It can become an overly complicated process and, more often than I’d like to imagine, people are often so openly biased and assume that their prejudice is also good enough for their children.
I had this weird dream last night that involved M&M’s and it got me thinking. If the time ever comes that I have to explain to my son why people are different and what makes them different…I could use this candy.
If one closes their eyes and eats one at a time individually, there is no real difference in taste. However, there are many different shapes and colors.
People, I may explain, are like this candy. There are scientific reasons why we may be different on the outside and why they are the way they are, but it doesn’t make them a different kind of candy.
In the end…we’re all part of the same candy bag.
